Breaking News: U.S. Eases Visa Rules for Ghana.

Oct 2, 2025

The United States has lifted the visa restrictions that were previously imposed on Ghana, a move that now allows Ghanaian citizens to apply for five-year multiple-entry visas alongside other expanded consular privileges. This major development was officially announced by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Saturday, September 27, through his verified Facebook page.

According to the minister, the diplomatic breakthrough is the result of months of high-level negotiations between Accra and Washington. He expressed optimism that this positive outcome signals a new phase in Ghana U.S. relations, which had been described as “strained” in recent years.

The visa policy change comes just weeks after President John Mahama confirmed that Ghana had reached an agreement to host West African nationals who had been deported from the United States as part of America’s efforts to address illegal immigration. He further noted that the first wave of deportees had already been accommodated in Ghana, a move that is believed to have contributed to easing diplomatic tensions.

The strained relations were previously highlighted by two main issues: the visa restrictions on Ghanaian citizens and the increased customs duties on Ghanaian products entering the U.S., which were raised from 10 percent to 15 percent. With this latest measure, it is hoped that relations between the two nations will strengthen, creating more opportunities for cooperation.

The United States had initially justified its restrictions, introduced in July, by pointing to the high number of Ghanaians, particularly students who overstayed their visas. Similar measures have also been placed on countries such as Cameroon and Nigeria, whose citizens were limited to single-entry visas valid for only three months.

Now, with the restrictions lifted, Ghanaians seeking to study, work, or visit family in the United States have renewed opportunities and greater flexibility. For students in particular, this represents a significant boost, as long-term visas can support smoother academic planning, mobility, and confidence in pursuing higher education in America.
