UK Study Visa Approvals Drop by 32%

May 22, 2026

The United Kingdom has recorded a significant drop in international student visa approvals in the first quarter of 2026, according to new figures released by the UK Home Office.

Data from January to March 2026 shows that study visa applications to the UK fell by 30% compared to the same period last year, while the number of visas issued dropped by 32%. The decline comes as the UK government continues efforts to reduce immigration and tighten border controls.

One of the biggest concerns is the sharp increase in visa refusal rates for students from several countries. Pakistan recorded the highest rejection rate, with more than 40% of applicants denied visas this year. Other countries affected include Bangladesh, Ghana, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria, where refusal rates were reported to be above 20%.

In comparison, China maintained a very low rejection rate of just 0.4%, while India recorded a refusal rate of 6.7%, slightly lower than the previous quarter but still higher than last year’s figures.

Education experts say the rising refusal rates are putting pressure on the UK’s reputation as one of the world’s top destinations for international students. Universities UK International warned that global demand for UK education is now “under serious pressure” as visa approvals continue to decline.

The latest visa figures come shortly after the UK government announced that net migration dropped to 171,000 in 2025, the lowest level since 2012 outside the pandemic years. The government says stricter immigration policies are helping restore control over the country’s borders, with tighter checks on student visas forming part of broader migration reduction measures.

Starting June 1, 2026, UK universities will also face stricter compliance rules under new Home Office policies. Universities with high student visa refusal rates could receive warning ratings under a new traffic-light system. Institutions with refusal rates above 5% may be marked “Red,” while those above 4% could receive an “Amber” rating.

As a result, many universities are expected to become more cautious when admitting international students, especially from countries with higher refusal rates.

For students planning to study in the UK, experts advise preparing stronger applications with clear financial documents, good academic records, strong English proficiency, and genuine study intentions.

Despite the tougher immigration environment, the UK remains one of the most popular destinations for international education, and thousands of students continue to secure visas every year.
