UK to Increase Student Visa Financial Requirement

Sep 4, 2026

International students planning to study in the United Kingdom will need to prepare for higher financial requirements when applying for a Student visa from November 30, 2026.

Under the new rules, students studying in London will need to demonstrate up to £14,130 in living expenses for a maximum nine-month period, while those studying outside London will need to show up to £10,827. The current figures are £13,761 for London and £10,539 for students outside London.

The monthly maintenance requirement will increase from £1,529 to £1,570 for students studying in London and from £1,171 to £1,203 for those studying elsewhere in the UK. These funds are intended to demonstrate that students can support themselves during their studies.

The financial requirement is separate from tuition fees and other costs associated with studying in the UK. Students should therefore consider the full cost of their education, including tuition, accommodation, transportation, food, visa fees and other living expenses when preparing their finances.

The UK will also increase the maximum accommodation offset from £1,529 to £1,570. Eligible students who have paid a qualifying accommodation deposit to their student sponsor may be able to use this amount to reduce the funds they need to demonstrate.

The visa application date will determine which financial requirement applies. Students submitting their applications before November 30, 2026, will be assessed under the existing requirements, while applications submitted on or after that date will be subject to the new figures.

For prospective students, the increase highlights the importance of starting financial preparations early. Applicants should ensure that they have sufficient funds and that their financial evidence meets the requirements applicable at the time they submit their visa application. UK student visa applicants must generally demonstrate that the required funds have been held for the required period before applying.

The increase comes as the UK continues to review and adjust its immigration and international student policies. For students considering the UK as a study destination, keeping up with the latest visa requirements is essential, particularly when planning finances and deciding when to submit an application.

Despite the higher maintenance requirement, the UK remains a popular destination for international students because of its globally recognised universities, wide range of academic programmes and strong international reputation.

Students planning to study in the UK in late 2026 or beyond should factor the new financial requirement into their overall study-abroad budget. Preparing the necessary funds and documentation well in advance can help students avoid unnecessary delays or complications during the visa application process.
